This beautiful manor house from the 19th century has a history that deserves to be told: the building is in the heart of Mahon and from its construction, in the year 1812, until the beginning of the 20th century it belonged to a renowned family, the Mercadal, who after the crac of the Bank of Mahón had to sell it.
That was when Sebastián Sapiña Femenías acquired it, who commissioned the first reform to his cousin, Francesc Femenías Fábregas, considered the best architect on the island, and who adapted the construction to Catalan modernism. The Sapiña lived in the house for almost a century, until at the end of the 90s, the architect Nando Pons and his wife, Ana Sánchez-Rodrigo Wickers, bought the property to install their architecture studio there.
For 15 years it was Nando's workplace, until in 2013 the couple decided to turn the office into a modern and cozy boutique hotel: Jardí de Ses Bruixes. The restoration works lasted one year and the original structure of the house was respected to the maximum. Ana was in charge of the decoration: "Everything is very thought and careful, to the smallest detail." The furniture was bought in antique shops and stores on the island; the complements, in decoration fairs, and many details she acquired in websites.
They are joined by the details that the couple collects on their different trips; a tea set in Camden Town, old copper cake molds in markets in Brittany and Alsace ... That interest in surrounding yourself with pieces that give personality to the house is also reflected in the paintings and sculptures scattered around different points of this boutique hotel. We found creations by local artists, Menorcans or people who have lived on the island for 25 years, such as Francesc Florit Nin, Carlos Gomila,
Jorge Fernández Alday or Laetitia Lara.
